SageThumbs FAQ
The questions readers ask most about SageThumbs, answered with the same verified facts used across this site: version 2.0.0.23 from 9 May 2017, 162 formats via the GFL library, AFPL GhostScript 8.54 for PostScript formats, and a GPL-2.0-or-later license. For anything deeper, follow the links into the tutorials and troubleshooting hubs.
Is SageThumbs free?
Yes. SageThumbs is free, open-source software released under the GNU General Public License version 2 or later (GPL-2.0-or-later). There is no paid tier, no trial period and no feature unlock; the same installer is free for personal and commercial use under the terms of that license.
What is the latest version of SageThumbs?
The latest released version is SageThumbs 2.0.0.23, released on 9 May 2017. No newer binary has been published since. A 2.0.0.24 entry exists in the project’s source history, but it was never released as a downloadable installer, so 2.0.0.23 remains the version to install.
Does SageThumbs work on Windows 11?
SageThumbs was written for Windows XP through Windows 10, and Windows 11 is not in its official system list. In practice it installs and renders thumbnails on Windows 11, with one quirk: its entries sit in the classic context menu, which Windows 11 hides behind the “Show more options” item. Our Windows 11 guide covers the setup and the quirks in detail.
Is SageThumbs safe to install?
SageThumbs is open-source software from a named developer, Nikolay Raspopov of Cherubic Software, and the installer is small enough to verify yourself. Download it from the official SourceForge project and check the file before installing: sagethumbs_2.0.0.23_setup.exe has SHA-256 hash 705d743e28b487e34a4a7245a0dbc303a10e45ba0fd9e4da4101c8cdf506839a. Any copy whose hash differs is not the official file. No software can honestly be promised as 100 percent risk-free, which is why the verifiable hash matters.
Which formats can SageThumbs preview?
SageThumbs previews 162 image formats through the GFL graphics library. The formats readers ask about most are PSD, AI, EPS, PDF, camera RAW formats such as CR2, NEF, ARW and DNG, and graphics formats including XCF, PSP, DDS, TGA and ICO. AI, EPS and PDF previews additionally require AFPL GhostScript 8.54 to be installed.
Does SageThumbs support WebP images?
No. The classic SageThumbs release does not support WebP, and the same applies to SVG, HEIC, AVIF, Adobe InDesign INDD files and Canon CR3 RAW files. For WebP and HEIC, use the codecs and extensions published for Windows by Microsoft and the format owners; for SVG, use a dedicated SVG shell extension. Our formats guide lists exactly what is and is not covered.
Why do AI, EPS and PDF files need GhostScript?
AI, EPS and PDF are PostScript-based formats, and SageThumbs does not contain a PostScript interpreter. It delegates rendering of those files to GhostScript, and it expects the specific AFPL GhostScript 8.54 build the developer provides alongside SageThumbs, in the 32-bit or 64-bit version matching your Windows. Without it, those three formats show generic icons while other formats preview normally.
What is the sagethumbs.db3 file?
sagethumbs.db3 is SageThumbs’ own thumbnail cache database. It stores rendered preview data so Explorer does not have to regenerate thumbnails for the same files repeatedly. It grows as you browse more image folders, and it is safe to delete: SageThumbs recreates it automatically, and previews simply render fresh the next time you open each folder.
How do I uninstall SageThumbs?
Uninstall it like any Windows program, from Settings or Control Panel’s Programs and Features list, then restart Explorer or sign out so the shell extension fully unloads. A standard uninstall can leave the sagethumbs.db3 cache file and its settings behind; our uninstall guide lists those leftovers and how to remove them for a completely clean removal.
Is this website the official SageThumbs site?
No. Sagethumbs.org is an independent documentation and guide site. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Nikolay Raspopov or Cherubic Software, and we do not develop SageThumbs. The software itself, its source code and its official downloads belong to the developer and the official project pages.
Where can I find the official SageThumbs project?
The official home of SageThumbs is Cherubic Software, the developer Nikolay Raspopov’s site at cherubicsoft.com, and the official project and downloads are hosted on SourceForge. Our download page links to the official SourceForge download as its primary button, and clearly labels the separate third-party mirror option.
