Why Windows 10 is SageThumbs’ home ground
SageThumbs 2.0.0.23, released on 9 May 2017, is the current version of this free, open-source Explorer shell extension by Nikolay Raspopov (Cherubic Software), licensed under GPL version 2 or later. Windows 10 is the newest system in the developer’s official requirements, which list Windows XP, 2003, Vista, 2008, 7, 2012, 8, 8.1 and 10 in 32-bit and 64-bit editions. On Windows 10 you are therefore on officially listed ground, with no compatibility caveats of the kind that apply to Windows 11. What SageThumbs does is simple to describe: it registers thumbnail handlers and a context menu extension with Windows Explorer so that image formats Windows handles poorly get real previews. It supports 162 image formats (224 extensions) through the GFL Library, plus another 26 formats via XnView plug-ins when XnView is installed. PSD files, the RAW formats in the official list (CR2, NEF, ARW, SR2, RAF, ORF, PEF, DNG, RW2 and others), TGA, DDS, XCF and PSP files are typical examples. WebP, SVG, HEIC, AVIF, INDD and CR3 are not supported, and no setting changes that.
Installing SageThumbs on Windows 10
Download sagethumbs_2.0.0.23_setup.exe from the official SourceForge project. One installer covers both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows, the file is 2,242,393 bytes (about 2.2 MB), and you can verify it before installing: SHA-256 705d743e28b487e34a4a7245a0dbc303a10e45ba0fd9e4da4101c8cdf506839a, MD5 2af65abf462c9b3170c6e80428f90888. A matching hash is the strongest quick check that you have the genuine, unmodified installer. Run the installer with the default options. On 64-bit Windows 10 the installer registers the 64-bit build of the extension, which is essential because Explorer on a 64-bit system cannot load a 32-bit shell extension. Restart Explorer or sign out and back in if thumbnails do not appear immediately, then test in a folder of images using a medium icons view or larger. Small icons and list views do not show thumbnails in Windows at all, which catches out many first-time users. If SmartScreen shows a prompt, the correct response is to verify the source and the hash, not to assume either safety or danger from the prompt alone. An unsigned or rarely downloaded file can trigger SmartScreen without being malicious, and a prompt is not proof of a false alarm either. The hash comparison is the check that actually tells you something.
Best settings to review after installation
The SageThumbs Options panel, available through the Control Panel and the Explorer context menu, is where the useful tuning lives. Four areas are worth a deliberate look rather than leaving everything untouched. First, the file type list. You can switch thumbnail support on or off per extension. If you use another tool for a specific format, disabling that format in SageThumbs avoids two handlers competing for the same files. Second, the thumbnail cache. SageThumbs keeps its own cache in a database file called sagethumbs.db3, separate from the Windows thumbcache. The options let you clear it. Clear it when previews show old versions of edited images, and leave it alone otherwise, because rebuilding thumbnails for a large photo library takes time. Third, the maximum file size option. SageThumbs can skip very large image files when generating thumbnails, which protects Explorer from stalling on huge scans or layered PSD files. If some of your largest files show icons instead of previews while smaller files in the same format work, this setting is the first place to look. Fourth, context menu behaviour. The right-click menu includes a preview image and file information, plus conversion to JPG, PNG, BMP or GIF, copy to clipboard, set as wallpaper and send by email options. If the classic Windows 10 context menu feels crowded, remember you are only seeing these entries when you right-click image files SageThumbs handles.
Getting AI, EPS, PS and PDF thumbnails on Windows 10
PostScript-based formats are the one group that needs an extra component. SageThumbs calls on AFPL GhostScript 8.54 to render AI, EPS, PS and PDF files, and that specific version matters: current GhostScript releases are not compatible with SageThumbs. Install the 64-bit GhostScript 8.54 build on 64-bit Windows 10 and the 32-bit build on 32-bit Windows 10, using the files hosted on the developer’s site at cherubicsoft.com. After installing GhostScript, restart Explorer and revisit a folder containing AI or PDF files to confirm the previews appear.
Day-to-day tips for photographers and designers
Keep your expectations aligned with what the tool is. SageThumbs is a preview layer, not an image viewer or editor; double-clicking a file still opens your default program. Its value is scanning folders visually instead of opening files one by one, which is why it pairs naturally with large PSD and RAW libraries. If Explorer ever feels slow in folders with thousands of images, the likely cause is thumbnail generation rather than SageThumbs misbehaving. Let the first pass finish, rely on the cache afterwards, and consider the maximum file size option before blaming the extension. And if you later move to Windows 11, the same installer is used there in practice, with the caveats described in our Windows 11 guide.
Frequently asked questions
Is Windows 10 officially supported by SageThumbs?
Yes. Windows 10, in both 32-bit and 64-bit editions, is the newest entry in the developer’s official system requirements for SageThumbs 2.0.0.23.
Which settings should I change first in SageThumbs Options?
Start with the per-format list if another tool handles a format you use, then check the maximum file size option if very large files show no preview. Clear the thumbnail cache from the same panel when previews look stale.
Why do AI and PDF files still show no thumbnails on Windows 10?
Those formats need AFPL GhostScript 8.54 installed alongside SageThumbs, matched to your system architecture. A current GhostScript release does not work as a substitute.
