Classic SageThumbs and SageThumbs 2K are not two versions of one product, and this page exists to keep them un-confused. Classic SageThumbs is the original: written by Nikolay Raspopov (Cherubic Software), released under the GNU GPL version 2, hosted on SourceForge, with its last published installer, 2.0.0.23, dating from 9 May 2017 and covering 162…
SageThumbs and IrfanView are both free, both decades-respected, and both about seeing your images — but they work at different layers. SageThumbs is an Explorer shell extension that shows thumbnails for 162 formats inside every folder window. IrfanView, by Irfan Skiljan, is a famously small and fast standalone viewer with its own thumbnail window, strong…
SageThumbs and XnView look like rivals and are actually relatives. The GFL library that decodes 162 formats inside SageThumbs was written by Pierre-E Gougelet — the author of XnView. The difference is presentation. SageThumbs puts those previews inside Windows Explorer itself, so every folder, dialog and desktop shows images. XnView is a complete image viewer…
PowerToys is Microsoft’s free utility collection for Windows, and two parts of it overlap with SageThumbs: its thumbnail providers, which add Explorer thumbnails for selected file types, and Peek, which previews a selected file with a keyboard shortcut. The comparison is therefore narrower than it first looks. SageThumbs is a single-purpose extension covering 162 image…
SageThumbs and QuickLook are often mentioned in the same breath, but they do different jobs. SageThumbs puts a thumbnail of every supported file directly in the Explorer folder — 162 formats’ worth of visual browsing. QuickLook gives one selected file a large preview when you press the spacebar, in the style macOS users know. One…
SageThumbs and MysticThumbs do the same job — thumbnails inside Windows Explorer — and differ in almost every other respect. SageThumbs is free and open source under the GPL version 2, covers 162 formats (224 extensions) via the GFL library, and has not released a new version since 2.0.0.23 in 2017. MysticThumbs is commercial software,…
If SageThumbs does not fit your system, your formats or your taste, you have real alternatives — but they are not interchangeable, because they solve three different problems. MysticThumbs is the closest like-for-like replacement: another Explorer thumbnail extension, commercial and maintained. QuickLook and PowerToys Peek solve a different problem, previewing a file on demand rather…
